Third Grade and Kung Fu Morals

Today was Avery's first day of 3rd grade! Of course, I went up to the school with him today to make sure he found the correct classroom and felt comfortable with the teacher. His instructor for the year is Mrs. Fitch and the only thing I know about Mrs. Fitch is that she enjoys frogs. They were plastered on the outside of the classroom, on the bulletin board and when she walked into the room she was carrying a large stuffed frog (name of the frog unknown... sorry, but I assume something like froggy or hoppy would be suiting). I have to admit that I think I'm going to like this teacher. I got a great 'vibe' from her (yeah, that's right... my vibes are usually right on) and she was so happy that I couldn't stop smiling when I was near her. I felt very comfortable leaving Avery with her... errrr, I mean he felt comfortable. Ok, ok so the visit was more for me than him! Since he has been going to school I've learned that although I may get super stressed worrying that he will have a nice teacher, be able to make friends, not be seated next to the school bully in his class or be the only kid with glasses in class... Avery really doesn't seem to care! I have to compulsively say good-bye at least three times and sneak as many hugs in as possible while secretly asking him if he feels ok for me to leave... just in case. Geez, I don't know what I would do if he said, "No, Mom... I don't actually. I can't stay here! Take me with you!" I would probably be stunned. Thank goodness he is strong and independent even if his Mommy is a sappy emotional girl. I finally was able to leave as the teacher was basically prying me away assuring me, "It is always harder for the parents than the children. Just go. He will be ok." LOL! Meanwhile Avery adds an urgency to the conversation, "Mom, geez... I'll be fine." So, I defeatedly walk away and head for my car thinking maybe it will be easier for me next year. After school Avery walked home and told me all about his day! He has two kids in his class and even sitting at his table that are in his Primary class at church! I'm so happy about this because I was hoping he would be able to make friends quickly. He told me he loves his teacher and was excited to find out that they get recess three times a day for the first week of school... awesome! Also, I learned that schools in Utah have short days every Friday! How cool if you are a kid! I would have loved that when I was growing up. He brought his homework home and we discussed the schedule for the week before we headed up to the movie theater to watch Kung Fu Panda as part of FHE.
When we got home we played army men (I won, btw... hehe) and then I gave him a lesson on how each person is special in their own way... using the moral of Kung Fu Panda as an example. Avery loved it! We then took turns reading the first chapter of one of the Boxcar Children books before we did our nightly ritual... family prayer and a song on the guitar. It was such a great day. I feel blessed that I have the wonderful son I have and that he is able to attend such a nice school.

oh you are making me teary eyed. You are such a good mommy. Even though she was ushering you out, teachers love to see how much their kids mean to them. It really helps to see that student as a child, and not just another number in the class. Avery looks like he is used to having to pose at every angle. And I can totally see him pushing you out the door. Poor Stephanie. I can see now who the real man in your life is!
Lol... it's so true, Jacque :)
Avery is so handsome! He looks so confident and sure of himself - just like his Mom.
I'm glad you both like his teacher and that he already has friends.
You'll always feel this way. I felt that way when you moved to Utah.
Awww... thanks Mommy :) I miss you tons!
